The 2007 Kalamunda Zig Zag Festival will be held on Sunday this year.

The Festival will be held in Stirk Park from 11:00am till 8:30pm.  We are hoping the change of day will encourage even more people to attend, especially families who tend to be busy with shopping and sports events every Saturday. As usual we’re sure the festival will attract people from all over Western Australia

We all know that the STARS shine brighter in the Hills, so this year we would like to celebrate the Festival with the theme

‘Stars in the Hills’.

Stars aren’t only in the heavens; the Hills are sprinkled with star studded attractions and local personalities all of which contribute to our community Festival.  The Zig Zag Festival is an annual community based celebration that will feature the talents and artistic skills of our ‘local stars’ – the musicians, visual artists, dancers and creative community artisans in all areas of the arts.  The Festival will also feature glittering young talent and special performances from school students from the Hills. This is the time of year that our local Stars are encouraged to shine and help us to create a wonderful day out for young and old.

The Zig Zag Festival is still known as one of the few remaining locally-based community arts festivals.  Local crafts, local entertainment, community workshops, and schools projects all contribute to the day of celebration.

The Hills Area around the Shire of Kalamunda has always had a real village culture, and a sense of community you can sense even as a visitor.  Stimulating the creativity of a community like this to do exciting and new things can produce amazing results.

The Parade

This year marks the first evening Festival Parade held in six years in Kalamunda.  The parade will start at 6:00pm and wind its way through the main shopping precinct of Kalamunda on Haynes Street finishing at Stirk Park at 6:30.  This is always a big highlight for hundreds of people who come to see and join in the fun along the main street of Kalamunda. In the Parade this year we will have the Chameleon Brass Marching Band, the Huge Festival Puppets created by students of Lesmurdie Senior High School.  The procession will include the hilarious Black Nonnas, Kite Kinetics, the Kalamunda Swimming Club, and a Festival Float created by the Soroptomists and lots more….

The Parade arrives in the park to herald the start of the Festival Star Dusk Concert.

The evening concert will showcase Perth band New Rules for Boats, the Kalamunda Swing Dancers and the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band will keep you dancing till the stars come out!

We are a not for profit group run by volunteers to promote the arts and community action in the hills and foothills communities roughly within the Shire of Kalamunda.

The Kalamunda Zig Zag Community Arts Festival began in the early 1980's as a local Shire initiative. During the first 10 years of its existence, responsibility gradually shifted to the community, until 1993 when the Festival Committee became a separate entity as a community-based non-profit group.

Between 1994 and 1998, the focus of the Festival Committee was on events and activities for the one-day festival. Since then there has been an increased emphasis on gaining input from youth.

Zig Zag Community Arts has taken on a broad community development role with extended programs that involve many sectors of the community. These have included youth programs that extend throughout the year. The change occurred with the recognition of the value of the Festival and the Arts as tools for addressing social and community issues.

The committee consists entirely of volunteers.  They are community members with a broad range of skills including community development, project management and youth work.  Throughout the year project teams coordinate art and music workshops that involve both professionals and gifted amateurs.  This year the workshops in schools will include making huge puppets at Lesmurdie Senior High School, and for the adults, stand-up comedy workshops leading to a showcase of famous and local comedy talent.

The Aim of Zig Zag Community Arts is to involve the community in the appreciation of, and participation in community arts.

This year we will present the famous Zig Zag Festival on October 28th, our annual celebration of community creativity and a showcase for the community's arts and cultural achievements.
